On this article, I feature yet another rapper. I first learnt about him through Twitter. He has been invited on local radio stations not thrice to talk about and share his music with the world. After a few months of follow up, he finally decided to share his bio with me last week.
“Kevin Hiuhu (born November 18, 1991), best known by his stage name “Kevin Grands”, is a Kenyan recording artist, producer and mix engineer from Nairobi, currently working under the independent label, ID37 Music, which he is also a founding member of.
Kevin gained interest in music at an early age, being mostly a fan of both local and international acts in different genres. He later on developed a much more specific love for hip hop and rap music which led to what he has become today. The 24-year old rapper, now well known for being part of the young up-and-coming acts in Nairobi, started writing music in 2008 and recording it himself in 2009. At the same time, he was also making beats on his PC and offering them to fellow rappers he knew at the time. 2008 and recording it himself Kevin first received recognition in 2011 following the release of his debut mixtape “The Bright Side: State Of Mind” which was well received among peers and fans at his university.
In 2012, he was featured in one of the most critically acclaimed cyphers, The People’s Choice Cypher, as part of the Coola Gang group. He worked as a member of Coola Gang on a series of projects including their debut mixtape “Just A Mixtape: The College Handbook” which he engineered as well as was the executive producer of. After leaving Coola Gang, he, along with two of his long time university friends started their own outfit, ID37 Music, After leaving Coola Gan where he is the head producer and mix engineer, as well as being a recording artist under it. He also featured in the 2012 Kisima Awards Cypher alongside other top hip-hop acts in the country.
At ID37 Music, Kevin Grands has featured in a collaboration mixtape with Shukid and Kavuela titled “Quick Hunnit” and also released his sophomore mixtape “Rap x Streetlights” on April 27th, 2014. He has also worked with a handful of up-and-coming artists, recording, mixing and also producing some of their music. 2015 has seen him work on an EP (extended play) titled “Maiden Memoirs” which was released on 5th June, 2015. 2015 has seen him In 2016, his single “No Company” held various spots in local radio charts, including the #1 spot for 3 consecutive weeks.“
